  • The Commons Brownell Library Little Compton, RI 02837 USA (map)

Join us July 8th at 5:30PM at the Brownell Library, The Commons.

Norman Desmarais, Professor Emeritus at Providence College will talk about Fort Church and Rhode Island Coastal Defenses during World War II

He will identify the locations of the three reservations which Fort Church occupied. The talk will also describe the defenses at each reservation as well as neighboring defenses and how they worked together to defend the Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts coastline. There will be a particular emphasis on the 16-inch guns.

This event is free and open to the public to attend.

Unloading at the Tiverton rail depot. Interestingly there is a motion picture camera and crew on the hillside filming. CDSG members were able to view this film at the 2011 Narragansett Bay Conference.

Passing the Stone Bridge Inn, Tiverton, RI

Unloading at New Haven, CT Railroad.

Chain drive Mack from C.E. Hall & Sons.  They delivered a number of 16" gun barrels.

The barrel is marked "No Pictures." There are also signs saying "This is News, but keep it dark" that are not visible in these pictures. Obviously not everyone followed the directions.

Workmen installing the barrel into Battery Gray.
